Plan anchor placement

Anchors make the devices your workers carry work indoors. Where GPS is poor or missing, a device running the Blecon Agent that detects a placed anchor gets the anchor's position and floor, and the assets it detects are placed there too. Your zones then count and alert on assets inside the building. This guide plans where the anchors go, before you fit them.

Anchors are optional. A site that is outdoors, or that hubs cover, needs none.

Prerequisites

  • The building drawn as a zone, with its floors and rooms. See Set up a site.
  • A floorplan of each floor, or measurements.
  • The routes your workers with devices take. See Deploy the Blecon Agent.

Step 1: Mark where devices lose GPS

Mark the areas inside the building where workers carry devices: aisles, docks, production lines, corridors. Indoors, assume the devices have no good GPS fix. Anchors help only in these areas, because an anchor gives a position only to a device that detects it.

Step 2: Put an anchor in each area you want to tell apart

An asset is placed where the anchor near its device is. Put at least one anchor in each zone you want to count assets in, such as each room or each section of a floor:

  • An anchor gives a position accurate to 10 metres at best.
  • Each zone must be at least half your accuracy filter wide. The zone editor warns when one is too narrow.
  • Put anchors on each floor. An anchor puts the assets near it on its floor, so assets on a floor with no anchor or hub are in none of that floor's zones.

Step 3: Put anchors where devices pass

Fit each anchor where the devices pass close to it: beside an aisle, at a dock door, on a pillar at a junction. Avoid places behind metal racking or above water pipes. An anchor in a corner no device reaches does nothing.

Step 4: Write down each place

For each anchor, write a name and a position description, such as "Dock door 3" and "On the pillar left of dock door 3, 2 m up". The Add an anchor workflow asks for both as you fit each tag, and the description tells whoever places the anchor on the map where it is.

Step 5: Fit and place them

Fit the tags with the Add an anchor workflow, and place each one on the map. An anchor with no position has no effect. Set a site on the workflow, and each anchor is placed in the zone you choose as you fit it. See Set up a site and Place anchors as you fit them.
