Fixed hotspots
Fixed hotspots are dedicated hardware units mounted at permanent locations in your facility to provide consistent Bluetooth scanning coverage.
Setting up fixed hotspots
- Mount the hotspot at your chosen location — ceiling mounting is recommended for even coverage.
- Power on — Connect to power (PoE or AC adapter, depending on model).
- Connect — The hotspot connects to the Blecon cloud automatically via Ethernet, WiFi, or cellular.
- Register — Add the hotspot to your account as a managed hotspot in the Console or via the API.
- Configure location — Set the hotspot's coordinates for accurate positioning.
Configuring location
After registering a hotspot as managed, set its location for accurate positioning:
- GPS coordinates (latitude/longitude) — For multi-building or outdoor deployments.
- Local coordinates (x/y/z in meters) — For indoor floor plans with a local reference frame.
- Network zone assignment — Assign the hotspot to a network zone for room-level presence tracking without coordinate surveying.
These manually configured coordinates take priority over the hotspot's self-reported location.
Placement guidelines
- Space hotspots 10–15 meters apart for 2–5 meter positioning accuracy.
- Mount at consistent heights for reliable signal measurement.
- Avoid placing directly behind large metal objects or water sources.
- Document hotspot locations for future maintenance.
For detailed placement guidance, see Plan hotspot placement for a warehouse.
Monitoring
Managed hotspots are monitored for online/offline status. The Console shows:
- Online/offline — Whether the hotspot is currently reporting data.
- Last seen — When the hotspot last communicated with the cloud.
- Group — The hotspot group, if assigned.
Hotspots are checked every 15 minutes. If a managed hotspot hasn't reported within the check interval, it's marked offline. You can configure alerts on hotspot groups to be notified when hotspots go offline.
